6 interesting things to do in Oklahoma City
Visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum
When you travel to OKC you must visit the National Memorial and Museum. The site commemorates the horrific bombing of the Murrah Federal Building of 1995 in which 168 people were killed. The memorial plaza with its reflecting pool, the Gates of Time, and the field of empty chairs remind us of the tragic events. Because of Covid, we only visited the outdoor area but the museum is great to visit as well.
Check out the State Capitol Building
Built in the neo-classical style, the State Capitol Building is certainly worth visiting. While the building was finished in 1917, the dome was not completed until 2002. Topping the dome is a 17-foot tall bronze sculpture of ‘ the Guardian’, whose replica you can also find inside. The interior has many interesting pieces of art, many of them depicting significant events in Oklahoma’s history.
Relax at Scissortail Park
Scissorstail Park offers dozens of acres of green space, including woodlands, gardens and a lake. It’s a lovely place to relax or walk around. I think it’s great that OKC has dedicated so much land to an outdoor park. Saturday farmers market also takes place right in the park, so definitely stop by.
Walk through the botanical gardens
The Myriad Gardens, as they are officially called, are located downtown and offer a wonderful place to relax or find some shade. The landscaping is beautiful, the plants are varied, and the whole area is lovely.
Stroll along the Bricktown Canal
The Bricktown district is a must see when visiting Oklahoma City. The former warehouse area is another great example of urban renewal and is now a thriving section of town. Bricktown was established shortly after the Land Run of 1889 and has been an important part of Oklahoma City. My favorite part was actually the Canal area which has many restaurants and bars. You can take a short cruise along the canal or just wander along it. It’s surely enjoyable.
Catch an OKC Dodgers’ game
Just east of the Bricktown Canal is the Oklahoma City Dodgers’ baseball stadium. You can catch a Triple-A game here but even if you don’t, definitely walk around the stadium. Check out the statues of several prominent players or grab a drink in a nearby bar.
