Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore by boat

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin comprises 21 forested islands with lovely lighthouses, beaches, and rock outcroppings. In truth, we didn’t even plan on visiting Apostle Islands on this trip. However, once we arrived in Bayfield, we decided to see if we would be able to get tickets for the next boat tour. Since Apostle Islands is mostly a water -based park, you have to take a boat to truly appreciate it. Surprisingly, there were still  seats available on the Wrecks, Rocks and Lighthouses tour ($39 per person), which sounded interesting. Since this was only a 2.5 hour cruise, it worked perfectly with our schedule, so we decided to do it. It was a good decision and we certainly enjoyed it.

Because it was a narrated tour, we learned a little bit about the history of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as well as some interesting facts about individual islands.

The boat went around several islands and the views were charming. We saw two lighthouses located right next to each other on Michigan Island, which was quite nice. I particularly liked Hermit Island and its rocky coastline with impressive outcroppings.

A lot of people were interested in the ship wrecks and the boat spent quite a bit of time hovering over them. The boat had a glass bottom, so you were able to see the remnants of the hull.

Overall, it was a lot of fun to be on the water enjoying such pretty scenery. We were definitely glad we decided to take a boat tour. As I said before, that’s the only way to fully appreciate the Apostle Island National Lakeshore.
