Medicine Rocks State Park is located in south eastern Montana, not far from the North Dakota border. The park preserves a field of interesting rock formations in the middle of a prairie. This area was of special significance to Native Americans who would gather here before a hunt. We enjoyed visiting the park and hiking around the rocks. Here are several suggestions on how to enjoy Medicine Rocks State Park in Montana.
How to Enjoy Medicine Rocks State Park in Montana
1. Hike the Dalton Trail
The Dalton Trail is a loop that begins and ends in the campground. You basically hike on the west side of the campground past interesting rock formations and ponderosa pines. The sandstone rocks are of various shapes and sizes, with lots of holes, arches, and pillars. Enjoy this short hike which is less than a mile long!
2. Enjoy the Sunset Trail
Similarly to the Dalton Trail, the Sunset Trail takes you past the sandstone buttes. On this trail, however, you do climb onto them and can get great views of the area from above.
3. Spend the night camping in the park
There is a small campground at Medicine Rocks State Park. I’m not sure how full the park gets. We visited in August and there was nobody there. We definitely enjoyed camping at the state park among the pine trees and the rocks.
