Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a scenic area on the Upper Peninsula with colorful cliffs, gushing waterfalls, and beautiful views of Lake Superior. The name derives from the minerals present in the sandstone, which gave the rocks a rainbow of colors.

While we stopped at three other national lakeshores on this trip, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was especially beautiful.  Log Slide Scenic Overlook was our first stop and the views of the dunes certainly impressed us. We then drove to Twelvemile Beach where we went for a swim. In a word, the beach was lovely and, surprisingly, there weren’t many people around.

Our favorite site, however, was Miners Castle. Essentially, this was one of the most spectacular views on the whole trip. I loved the gorgeous panorama of the bay with the golden cliffs and turquoise water. The views of Lake Superior and the nearby Grand Island were magnificent as well.

Once we felt satisfied, we hiked down to Miners Beach and enjoyed a rather lengthy stroll. The beach was wild with lovely views of yellowish cliffs.

Finally, we drove to see Miners Falls– certainly impressive waterfalls. We also enjoyed the 1.2 mile hike through the forest.

Although we didn’t get a chance to hike to Chapel Rock or Grand Portal Point, I was pleased with the time spent in the park. It would have been nice to stay here for several days and explore the park a bit more but our schedule didn’t allow it. So, after several hours of sightseeing, it was time to go.

Overall, Pictured Rocks Lakeshore is a truly picturesque area. So much so that it is considered one of the most scenic places in Michigan. Don’t you think so?
