Simple Musings on Visiting Kauai in April

Here we are. Going on another trip to Hawaii. This time we’re traveling to Kauai. We will be visiting Kauai in April. This is going to be our 4th island in 3 years. First time we went, we visited both Oahu and the Big Island. Last year, we visited Maui. And now, it is time to see Kauai.

I’ve heard many great things about the island. It’s not like you hear anything bad about Hawaii. People love Hawaii. They’re envious when you tell them you’re going to Hawaii. But, it appears, most people I know who have made multiple trips to the islands tend to prefer Kauai.

I have high expectations. I am looking forward to the sun, the slow pace of the island, the lush scenery, the spectacular beaches, and the unknown. That’s the magic of traveling. There is always the unknown. The feel of the place, the way it smells, the way it looks. No matter how much research I do, how many pictures I look at, the reality is always unique. I I like that feeling, the feeling of being in a new place, seeing new things every day.

I’m looking forward to Kauai. I was really excited about the Napali coast. I guess we won’t be able to hike there. Apparently, the rains last year caused a lot of damage to the roads and trails in the north. We’ll have to visit another time. Maybe in the winter of 2020. That’s our plan. We want to go back and visit two islands again. I think the Big Island will be one. We will decide on the other – it may be Kauai or it may be Maui. We’ll see. Either way, you probably can’t go wrong with either one.

I’m also looking forward to the Waimea Canyon. I am a fan of canyons in general – the lesser known ones, like the Columbia River Gorge and the popular ones, like the Grand Canyon or the Canyon of the Yellowstone. I am certain the Grand Canyon of the Pacific won’t disappoint.

And then there are the beaches, the crystal clear water, the colorful coral reef, the turtles, and the palm trees gently swaying in the ocean breeze. And even though we’re not the folks who will lie on the beach for hours, we like going for a morning swim or a stroll along the shore, and we’ll sit for an hour or so in the shade under an umbrella, relaxing, people watching, or daydreaming.

We will arrive in Lihue at 9 pm island time today. We’ll have to rent a car and drive to Poipu where we will be staying for a week. Since we’re visiting Kauai in April, we’re a little concerned about the weather. Regardless, I know we will have a great time. Aloha!
